André Hemer is a painter known for the exuberance, colour, energy and vitality of his practice. At a residency in Seoul, South Korea, Hemer conceived of the concept of an artwork that would take his painting off the canvas and out into the city streets.
Hemer transmits his signature painting style into the blank canvas of a white umbrella in his trademark cerise pink, a colour also shared by the Breast Cancer Research Trust. |

Jim Wheeler’s ‘Golden Bloom’ reflects the artist’s ongoing engagement with botanical subject matter. For the ‘Art for a Cure’ exhibition, Wheeler states: “I wanted this piece to be within the regional flora and the frangipani has great cultural significance for the Pacific. A bloom is a pinnacle of expression containing the promise of fertility and continuity. Gilding bronze is an ancient tradition around the world referencing the eternal. Here I want to embody human endurance together with unending dedication to finding solutions. Gold is ancient and unchanging and its brilliance represents inspiration.” |

The form that inspired Bronwynne Cornish’s ‘Frida’ was a piece created by the artist’s young granddaughter Sesi, who is learning the art of sculpture from her nana. Cornish’s piece is named after the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo who portrayed herself as a deer. This concept appeals to Cornish who sees Kahlo’s self-portrait as an acknowledgement of the interconnectedness of humans, animals and the natural world as a whole. Created for the ‘Art for a Cure’ exhibition, ‘Frida’ the sculpture is both a symbol, and evidence, of the knowledge or the rich cultural inheritance and beauty that connects generations. |

In ‘Soft’, Browne explores the conventions of neon signage usually associated with the world of commercial advertising. The work is visually powerful yet soft in contrast to the hard, glass phosphorus tubing out of which the work is made. This tension invites viewers to reflect on the contradictions and proliferations of meaning. Conceived by Browne for ‘Art for a Cure’, ‘Soft’ is both visually sensitive and strong, and conceptually it connects the disparate worlds of science, advertising, literature and sculpture. |
